Well, as the use of milsurp seems to rattle a few cages here, we'll go over our reasons for doing so again.
We collect older bolt action rifles, most of ours being Pre-1914 though with a smattering dating as late as 1953. We shoot milsurp through those because its authentic and relatively inexpensive. It therefore suits the rifles and our abilities.
For this new build gun, we want to have the ability to fire both milsurp and also better quality canned bangs. Our reckoning, possibly at fault because we're a small brained kreecher, is that whilst we may get good results firing milsurp and even match quality canned bangs through a good barrel, we won't get good results firing milsurp or high grade bangs through a poor barrel. It therefore seems logical to us to fit the best barrel we deem affordabubble, even if we do use it mainly for milsurp. It'll still have a reserve of performance to call upon if and when we pop some paw loaded, match grade, gold plated cast boolits through it.

Its your money Badger its up to you what you spend it on. None of my buisness.
I would just buy a SSG P1 and stick a KHALES scope and a bipod on it.
(Actually no I wouldnt I have all ready got one.)

Buddy I donot beleive you will better one of the AI std rifles , AW , AWSM or AX with any custom rifle , and IF you need a calibre they donot sell , then just get a barrel made for the AI rifle , so sorted move on .
I have factory & custom Tac LR rifles , from SSG PIs , Sako TRg-22 , PH M85 , C3A1 ( PH M87 ) , AI AW , AWSM & AX338 , as well as complete custom build , on PGW Twolf actions , Badger M2008 , short & magnum action s as well as Surgeon s.
So its with experience of both top line custom buildt & top line factory guns , and in the end for a variety of reasons , but a gunsmith will NEVER tell you this , as his business is to sell you sonething he can BUILD for you from top components .
BUT thats what I am telling you from a actual end user that has experience both ways to get a rifle , and my considered advice is go factory , ie AI .
But again as you WANT to build what you think will be the most prefect tac rifle EVER , you will ignore this advice and go down the custom build path .
All the above is not what you want to be told however , as you know better , so just disreguard this advice .
Later Chris

Hmmm, nice rant, er, contribution.... We genuinely are seeking advice, ooman, and yours will be valued as highly as the rest. The Dolphin sets a benchmark and is highly spoken of by many who are qualified to judge. Equally, we have personal experience of the L96A1 so certainly don't intend to disregard it - an AI with interchangeable barrels would be a very good buy. We just choose not to close our mind to all possibilities.
