It always puzzles me what is meant by "download" in this context?

"Download" from what?

The old rules for gallery rifle competitions actually stated that only recognised pistol calibres could be used in the centrefire events, and that downloaded rifle cartridges were not allowed. Presumably this was to avoid any accidental mix ups with ammo. I think that the rules have since been changed but I haven't looked at a current rule book.

perhaps his range, as mine, has a prohibition on downloaded full bore rifles ?
Why should / could it have a prohibition? if a rifle is under the MV & Energy why prohibit it because of its 'description'?
One of my current ranges has asked me not to shoot fullbore rifles in the 25m range. My loaded rounds will not be an issue as they will be within the mv but they are worried that someone may see me shooting my guns and shoot their factory loaded 303 etc. This could pass straight through the backstop and kill anyone in the armoury behind. I don't mind not doing it for that reason

Surely it is incumbent 'pon all range users to be aware of a range's certificate limits and use ammunition that complies with those limits.

I f a club suspects that it has members who do not fulfil that responsibility then it is they who should be brought up not responsible users penalised for their failure.

Not necessarily - I explored this when I wanted to purchase an M1 to use on our range using lead bullets. Apparently our range is only approved for rifles using a pistol calibre. I'm sure there are plenty of ranges in the same boat that can't readily be hardened to suit the inspector.

it always puzzles me when people can't work out context from a discussion :p

So tell me in this context what is it downloaded from?

sigh, if you shoot cast bullets from a rifle that would usually fire FMJ's then it would be normal to consider the cast load "downloaded" as it generally produces less velocity and energy, and in the context of this thread, that is the aim, there are of course people who, for their own reasons shoot cast bullets at close to (possibly over?)FMJ velocities.
I have had this discussion with several ranges over the last year and all of them are not happy to have non pistol calibres fired in their ranges, I am not trying to justify their ruling I just put it forward as a possible reason for the OP wishing to convert an Enfield to a pistol calibre.

For some thing to be "downloaded" it must be less than established amount of MV/ME.

Unless there is clarity as to what that benchmark is then the expression is surely meaningless in this context.

For example if we take CIP values for a calibre as the benchmark then is any factory round that comes under those values considered as "downloaded" ammunition?

If so then it would still no doubt be over the top for most 25yrd indoor range certificates even although it is "downloaded".
