Rifle scope what to buy.

MilDot = a method of range estimation using the reticule
Moa = Minutes of Angle
BDC = Bullet Drop Compensation
FMJ = Full Metal Jacket
SMK = Sierra Match King ( a type of bullet)

Put any of those into google or whatever search engine you use and you will get all the answers that you will ever need

Also I have noticed you only ask about abbreviated words in other peoples threads and not your own.

I try not to use abbreviations.
If you read the post you will see I said the following the following description is taken of another forum. I think this is the bit that has the abbreviations its not up to me to correct some one else's post.

People assume you know what they are talking about and use abbreviations quite often I have given up on threads on here because I have no idea what they are talking about because of the use of abbreviations.

Any way that's an aside no I had no idea SMK means Sierra match Kings why would I. I have never used them why would I when as I said before 99% of my rifles are milsurps. I probably know more about cast boolits than I do full metal jackets. I think I am pretty knowledgeable about re loading I know all about Parker Hale aperture sights and how they work. Rifle scopes Sierra match kings have not got a clue. I don't know what BDC means either. Sorry I do now some one translated for me. I can probably guess the rest

One of the things that brought me to this forum originally was the fact that it is not dedicated to milsurps like most of the other sights I visit and moderate on its not only about military ammo but there are people with expertise in all sorts of shooting disciplines F class, Bench rest long range shooting Black powder etc.
So we can all learn from each other.

But my philosophy is this when answering a question or imparting information to some one you should assume they know nothing about the subject and give them as much information as possible do not assume they can read your mind.

How long have I been shooting I don't know probably thirty year.

Any way I am trying to familiarise my self with rifle scopes so that's enough of that. Adam throwing googly balls at me.

This question I asked about optics is taking me on another fascinating journey of discovery.
Like I said the most exotic rifle I own is a old Steyr SSG P1( I have no idea what the SSG stands for) I believe the P stands for Police and then number one of course so P1.
Any way to get to the point as far as I know its only had one previous owner I bought it off him when he retired from shooting several years ago. I have been examining the scope it came with its a Khales zf 84.
(zf 84 being the model number I guess) Its a 1" tube and its 6-42x50 these numbers mean nothing to me.
Any way I had a look in the box the rifle came in lots of bits of paper re loading data and this original Factory target 5 shots at 100 meters. But not only that it also tells you the ammo and bullet weight used to create this group.
I now know for certain that this scope is calibrated to the rifle and set up to shoot 168grain Norma match ammo. The turrets are calibrated from 100 to 800 meters for the 168 grain bullet. Fascinating there is still lots of other bits of paper etc. to go through. Don't you just love this hobby.

Any body know how fast the Norma match 168grain bullet travels. I have been using 155grain Hornady A max with N140 with good results. But I am keen to try the 168grain Norma match now. Can you still buy this ammo does any one know. Fascinating how cool is that.

I am looking at a scope it says 6-42x50.
I guess the 50 is the size of the lens. What does the 6-42 tell you.

6 to 42 times magnification, and yes the 50 is the objective lens diameter, x42 tends to be very specific to Nightforce.
