Re: Steyr SSG 69 P1
A little bit jealous!
I've always really wanted one of these.
Once the barrel is shot out it would make an interesting project... rebarrelled and chambered in 260 Rem, new trigger guard and bottom metal to accept AI magazines, all the metalwork ferritic nitrocarburised (or Cerakoted in an appropriate colour [H-226 Patriot Brown?]), and the stock in H-267 Magpul Flat Dark Earth.
I've got too much time on my hands fantasizing about guns.

A barrel change on one of these rifles is a job and a half. The barrels are not screwed into the action.
Ovenpaa I would be interested in the results of your outing with the 170 grain bullets. I have only ever used 155grain A max in mine with N140. But then I have never fired it over 350 yards due to range limitations.

Any competent machinist should be able to machine out the old barrel stub and screw cut a thread on the receiver to accept a new barrel.
A replacement Armalon hammer forged barrel (1 in 7.874" twist rate) including the machining, fitting + proofing would be around £700.

So about a grand for a new barrel then - sounds like a bargain!lapua338 wrote:Any competent machinist should be able to machine out the old barrel stub and screw cut a thread on the receiver to accept a new barrel.

If you're going to keep the gun it's no big deal. I don't understand the issue here.
You're not going to simply scrap a perfectly good rifle.
Once it's threaded then all the hard work is done.

A thousand pound just for a barrel yeah no problem at all I mean every body has that kind of money just falling out of there pockets don't they. No problem at all. Sorry for high jacking your thread Ovenpaa but getting back to the real world I would be really interested in the results of the 170 grainers.

Alpha, I will be out with the 170's in the next couple of weeks and will report back. My choice of 170 is as much because it is 'Old School' as anything. The barrel on the rifle looks very good and I am certainly not concerned about barrel life right now.
Re: Steyr SSG 69 P1
Psst, Dave!
Dont get too many people interested in the 170 LB's.
Thats what I use and they are hard enough to get hold of at a decent price as it is.

It looks just like mine...it came new from Steyr with matching case, test card, webbing sling, manual and Kahles scope.
As stated earlier, Armalon are a popular choice for re-barrelling but there are other machinist/smiths around. Oh and removing the front sight for fitting a moderator can be a pain as there are two steel pins driven vertically through the front sight.
I originally went down the route of stripping out the bottom plastic, 3d scanning and making a CAD model for fitting G3 magazines. The 3D printed prototype actually worked and I started to investigate producing polymer kits but there is a european source of aluminium ones who are a pain to deal with and most recently a US source who actually offer a good kit at an affordable price.
