Well when mine is shot out I will swap you the whole thing with two 5 round magazines and 2 ten round magazines for a Remington 700 action.

In the name of all the shooting gods, why would you consider going from a precision piece of engineering and design like the Steyr to a mass produced "if you're lucky you might get a good one" Remington 700???

The humble Rem700 is quite capable of shooting well. I know of two people both shooting the 700 PSS last weekend see superb groups at 200, one shot sub half MOA with 185 Scenars (Off a Harris bipod) at 200 yards and the other a tad over half MOA with 2156 SMK's at 200m both with standard actions and standard 26" barrels. I was impressed.

This was the one with 185's and they were not even built for his rifle!

I would still take the Steyr though tongueout

I know there are good ones but I know of 2 locally in 204 and 223 which are complete dogs and won't group well with anything thrown at them. As a donor action with an improved trigger and a better barrel they can be very accurate but it's a bit like chucking the baby out with the bath water (that's a good old expression!).

I'd take the Steyr any time

A shot out Steyr SSG is no good to any body. Its not shot out and when it is I will not be rebarreling it. Any way ovenpaa has first dibs on it.

Why is a shot out ssg no good to anyone? All the smith has to do is cut off the barrel at the front if the action and then thread the action.

This is why I would like to get my hands on one. chambered in 6,5x47 with a look alike barrel profile to the P1 with open sights added it would make a cracking rifle. The hard part is going to be threading the receiver once the old tube has been machined out. The receiver is going to be tough so threading it will be interesting.

Worth the work I reckon.

Cutting the barrel off is no bid deal a hack saw would sort that. Boring the receiver hmm may be OK. Threading the receiver not something I would want to try. I could probably get it done at work. But I don't think I would bother.
Any way I worked it out last year I probably put 250 rounds through it and it may have been less than that. Most of my range days are a maximum of 300 yards and usually 100 yards some of them are 25 yards. Its just a waste of ammo at 25 or even a 100 yards.
I do most of my shooting with Millitary rifles and occasionally shoot the Steyr or the TIKKA 6.5x55.

It was 200 yards.

I do not reload - HPS ammo - the 168gr machine loaded in used cases.

The buy who originally bought it new ages ago, zeroed it but became ill - it went into storage for years til I got it.
