New Toy Time
Having decided to sell my A-Bolt II (not getting any use) I decided to go for something black in 300BLK so I can load down and use subsonic indoors use or load up for outdoors up to 200 - 300m. Looking round I found prices from £1200 to £2500 for straight pulls based on the AR-15 platform but then this caught my eye . . . . . http://www.advanced-armament.com/300-AA ... p_630.html
It's a single shot H&R Handi Rifle which has been modified by Advanced Armaments, new barrel, picatinny rail, phosphate finish, screw cut etc. in the US they are cheap as chips at around $359 (£245). North West Custom Parts are importing them into the UK and will have a batch back from proof shortly. I spoke to Wayne yesterday and UK price is £495.

Re: New Toy Time
The Handi rifle is really good value for the money. I've often fancied one in 7.62x39, it would make a first rate cast boolit shooter.
Mind you I'd just go for the bog standard wodden stocked version

Re: New Toy Time
Only has black I'm afraid but there are a lot of after-market stocks etc. available in the US.
I've got some 205gr cast spire point .310 boolits from Dodgyrog to try in it, probably over 10.5gr of Trail Boss or 9.5gr of the H110 I got from you. For supersonic 16.5gr of H110 and Nosler 168gr CC should be a nice load.

Re: New Toy Time
I have Handi-Rifle in 45-70, it's great fun to shoot! :shakeshout:
NB Old photos - It doesn't have the tang mounted sight any more as I didn't like it - now has a red dot fitted.

Any particular reason for using the 7.62x39 ?dromia wrote:The Handi rifle is really good value for the money. I've often fancied one in 7.62x39, it would make a first rate cast boolit shooter.

Re: New Toy Time
Because of the popularity over the years in the US market for 0.308" calibre due to the 30-06 round and its poor relation the 308/7.62 there are more good .308" moulds, boolit designs and weights around than in any other calibre.
As most cast boolit shooting is for target accuracy out to 600 yrds, as is probably most condom shooting as well due to the paucity of 600 yard plus ranges, then high velocity isn't required so the faster rifle powders are the propellant of choice like VV N120 as they use typically smaller charges of powder in the 20-30 grain range then the smaller case of the 7.62x39 is more suitable and gives better case fill with less chance of a double charge and more consistent combustion hence accuracy.
The 30-30Win, 30-40 Krag and the .303 British are also good cast boolit cartridges for similar reasons also they have the benefit of headspacing on the cartridge rim.
Simples.

Re: New Toy Time
What he said :goodjob:
The 300BLK gives the same ballistics as a 7.62 x 39 from the AR platform. It lends itself to both sub and supersonic loads very nicely, uses standard .308 bullets/boolits and is easy on the powder/wallet, 9 to 22gr of H110 will take you from 1000fps to 2400fps+
