Vz58

#1 Post by Blighty »

With all this talk of straight pull rifles (SVTs, SLRs etc) I've decided that I need something 'warry' to play with. Already have a SGCAR however I'm bored with it.
Recently seen the new made Vz58 straight pull and, frankly, I need it.
Any experience with these in 7.62x39 and how do they perform with regards to accuracy and extraction?

Only person who has experience shooting it is Pete Moore at Suffolk Rifle Company, he did the review in the current edition of Shooting Sports. I saw him on Thursday and had a chat about it, he has five more on order from Scott at Caledonian Classic arms which will be in the same batch as the one I have ordered. So I should be getting mine around the same time as him albeit I have ordered in .223. Pete told me that in his opinion the Vz would be his choice of straight pull at the moment.

Considering that it is reviewed in the current edition of shooting sports I would get down to WH Smiths and buy a copy, there is info about its performance and extraction in the article.

You are more then welcome to look over mine when it arrives or give Pete a call and organise a time to see him to give one of his a once over.

Dammit! I was hoping that you'd say they were no good.

I spoke to Scott and to be honest any RFD who replies to E-mails within minutes answering questions with words and pictures gets my vote.

Haven't read the article yet however would interested to know how the standard cocking handle feels on the fingers after extended use?

Thanks for the offer - where are you based?

Yeah Scott is a good guy from what I have experienced so far, albeit he still needs to get back to me on some parts prices (come on Scott how much do my FAB parts cost! ;) ) Pete at Suffolk Rifle is highly complimentary of him which is interesting to note of someone who is technically a commercial competitor. Considering how back biting dealers can be about rivals that is certainly a strong compliment. Proof is in the pudding really, once I have the rifle I will make my judgements but so far so good.

As for the cocking handle I think it is a case of suck it and see, he is offering left, right or dual options and he plans to have a drop back lever available as well. I have gone for right hand cocking at the moment but if the drop back left hand cocker is good once it is available I might well get that as well. So long as it doesn't involve cutting the rifle up as some solutions of that ilk involve.

I am based in Loughborough but as I am in the ODRC shoot at different military ranges, mainly at Kingsbury. I am looking forward to getting it down to Sennybridge once I have it.

When you say "Pete Moore at Suffolk Rifle Co" - do you mean that Pete owns this company as well as being a shooting journalist ?

Apparently so but I didn't pry. I could be getting names mixed up, nevertheless the guy I spoke to at Suffolk Rifle Company wrote the article...apparently razz

Surely that would be a conflict of interests ?

I agree, selling something you've written a review of does have a certain odour to it...

If so it certainly will not be the first time, look a bit closer at the magazines and you will find a fair few less than open interests.

Errrr guys I think you have misunderstood me or got confused!

The importer of the Sa vz.58 is Caledonian Classic Arms:

http://www.caledonianclassicarms.com/ac ... vz.58.html

So there is no conflict of interest whatsoever in respect of this rifle, as I said I might have people mixed up so lets not throw accusations of conflict of interest yet! Considering the person I met in Thursday said he wrote the article I presumed after the event it was Pete Moore, I might be wrong. As he was a very helpful nice guy at Suffolk rifle company the last thing I want to do is accidently tar him with a particular brush. Maybe the article was written by ghost writer!

Heck I tried to be helpful and I have opened a can of worms!
