Custom chassis build

#1 Post by jay851 »

hi
having decided to go for a tikka t3 in 6.5 x 55, i have been looking round at what chassis system stocks are available for it. i like the look of the xlr system but unfortunately they do not build it to take the long action ai mags, so have decided to have a go at building my own. i have built several 'one off's ' back in my airsofting days, but this will be my first live firing attempt so will be learning lots along the way. it will be based around the cheytac intervention m200, with my own touches added in there, and will take long action ai mags.
i dont have the tikka at hand yet so a bit limited as to what i can do, but have got some basic measurements so have made a start.
what i have noticed is the 6.5 x 55 sits quite loose in the ai feed lips, do the lips need modding to feed the 6.5. will be updating as i go and no doubt will have plenty of questions along the way.

cheers
jay

We think Roedale Engineering may do an AICS style chassis for the T3

EDIT - they do, see below

I am looking forward to the progress on this Jay, post lots of pictures!

Badger, yes Roedale do build a chassis based on the AICS and I have worked on them in the past. They are different in some areas and lacks some of the finesse of the original AI version.

will do mate, have some more pics to go up later when my phone has charged.

i had seen that the roedale was available for tikka long action, and although very nice i just wanted something different.

The Roedale at first glance is very similar however parts such as the front spigot are not interchangeable with the AICS and the design has been simplified, I assume to keep manufacturing costs down. As an example instead of having a release catch on the spigot retainer a simple grub screw is used. There are other parts as well however I would have to dig out my original build notes to see what they were.

One thing to look out for is the magazine height and release catch as it needs to be perfect if the system is to feed reliably however if you are using or basing it on an after market bottom metal you have just saved yourself a massive headache.

i was going to use the bottom metal i have but now using the chassis body. and like you said, it all has to line up properly so i have left the mag height and mag catch until i can mount the action. then i can work out the mag height etc.
some more pics, the magpul moe grip is just for fitting reference and will be replaced.

That looks very good indeed with a nice cutter transition, how did you cut the magazine well, EDM?

Cheers. all done on a slv manual mill with dro and power feed added making it like a cnc.
roughed out the magwell then finished the profile with a 6mm long series carbide s/mill.
