A good plinker

#1 Post by Dougan »

When you get to the point that you can't shoot prone anymore, your eyes aren't what they used to be and you want an easy operating action, what's a good rifle to put a scope on, plonk on the bench, and shoot with reasonable accuracy up to 600 yards...?

There's the obvious option of scoping up an Enfield or other classic; but lighter would be better...what about some of these straight pull rifles? (but nothing plastic) - What are the options caliber-wise? And is a straight pull M1 Carbine (.30) too light for 600 yards?

...any other options also considered...?

No, but one of the elders from the Drey is having problems...

I did think about K31s, but have never fired one - Can you put a pod and scope on one without damaging it?

I'm toying with going down the same route for the same reasons, pods and scopes can be attached to the K31 relatively easily.

There is a company called Swiss Products LLC in the US who make a very good and practical range off add-ons for Swiss lovelies, but I'm not sure about availability on this side of the pond - can anyone help?

Yuppity tree rat: clamp on mounts are available for scopes that require no smithing (we have a 6x Pecar on ours) and bipods are a doddle

Any of the BSA or Parker Hale second hand sporters with a good barrel and suitable calibre will do what you want quiet cheaply, they are most likely to come with a scope as well.

The PH 303's are fine rifles, the 6mm Musgraves are very good too and .222" is a tack driver of a round along with all the other calibres so take your pick.

Dougan, my bad mate. On reading this thread again I see the rifle is not for you though I still think the Kitty gun is so you. Anyway for the gentleman in question, may I recommend a nice commercial 6mm/6.5mm rifle. Both have pretty tame recoil and will get you out to 600 and beyond no problem.
