I take it this is when loading?

The way to load the falling block Sharps is.....

Half cock the hammer..... Drop the block to expose the chamber..... Insert cartridge...... Raise the block...... Full cock, sight and fire.

It's having the hammer down on the firing pin whilst loading that causes it to drag the pin across the base of the case whilst closing the block.

I scored probably around 200 cases before finding this method buried in a book about buffalo hunting some 80 years old....!!
In 1978 I was told by my grand dad that the secret to rifle accuracy is, a quality bullet, fired down a quality barrel..... How has that changed?

Have you tried chambering and closing the block with the firing pin removed?

I am with SimG on this, all I can think of is the block is catching the case head slightly on the up stroke. Have you tried it with the firing pin removed?
