Scope for a No.4

My father and I have just acquired a nice No.4 Mk2...it's a nice piece, which we intend to look after, but want to add a scope and cheek-piece...the original butt-stock, sights and bayonet are going to be stored, and a new butt-stock, cheek-piece, armalon mount and a scope are going to be added...

...but which scope?

We both want to keep it simple; somewhere around x 12 magnification, a fine cross hair (no illuminated reticules ect.), and find something suited to a No.4...everything within £300 seems to be all singing and dancing, but without any real quality...

...one scope I've seen, but would be pushing the budget, is a Leupold VX 1 4-12 x40...looks just the job; but I know very little about scopes...would this scope be suitable for target shooting up to 600 yards?

Or, what other scopes does anyone think are suited to a No.4...?

IMHO I would say no because it has hunting style turrets. A better choice is the VX-2 6-18x40mm, beautiful fine reticle, target turrets and excellent glass although it's only a 1" tube. I have one and they are not a bad price, you might pick one up second hand like I did because all the cool kids want mildot and 30mm tubes. And it's good from 50 yards at 18 power all the way out to 1000 yards.

Does it need to be high mag?

Regardless mate what about looking at the MTC range? Good value and they (in my experience) do cope fine with centrefire use, in spite of their popularity with airgunners.

(PS, I am saving up for an angle grinder for judicious use on the firing line...also deals with bench and seat legs when occupied by the bone idle.... :55: )

a lot of good work was done with a 3x scope on the number 4 .......................

MTC used to do a little low mag scope that looked a bit like the Simmonds, compact.

It appears to be a connect zero eye relief number now.

Sightron do some shorties as well, not sure of the prices though.

For what its worth, if it were me I would look to fit something as near to a No32 in terms of performance, go with the cheek piece and butt plan, but not fit a bipod, use a bean bag or a pack.

A lot more satisfying than a bipod if you can manage it.

That said I always seem to do better with just a sling as I can never get the position right with a bag etc and always end up compromising (I dont believe in the things anyway but thats my problem) but I accept that not everyone can shoot irons and a sling.

I was at Barton Road on Saturday and one of the members was zeroing a No4 Mk2 with a no gunsmith rail and one of the reproduction No32 Mk2 'scopes, it looked the part and seemed to be working quite well. A reasonably priced option and the rifle is easily returned to its original state if needed.

I think you're right - I did see this scope, and it would be perfect, but is out of our budget (though I'll see if there are any S/H ones about) - I was considering compromising on the turrets (12 x mag would have been enough), but would probably regret it...thanks Channel12.

Don't worry mate, I did get approval from Adam (who even supplied the NS mount) - The bits taken off (including the butt-stock so it won't be damaged by the cheek-piece) will be carefully stored, and the rifle will always be able to be returned to it's original condition...

...the reason we're doing it is because my old man's arthritis in his hands has got to the point where he can't use my Swing anymore (even from a bench) - this year he has been using our M96 on club days; which although fun at 600, can be tricky with the very basic sights...so he wanted another classic with an easy to operate action that you can put a scope on without damaging it...The No.4 was a no brainer

Also, while I liked Alphas pod adapter, my dad prefers to shoot on bag.

Have looked at this option; but I've been put off by people saying they're not very good...what have you heard about them?...also, again they are pushing the budget a bit, and I haven't seen any for sale in the UK (?)

If I had the dosh, I'd put the real thing on it...my dad would be all for an original post sight; as would I tongueout
