Scope recomendations

#1 Post by Geek »

Dear all,

I have been unable to obtain a secondhand AI AT, therefore I have purchased a Ruger Precision Rifle in 6.5 Creedmore today :) (always nice to buy new rifles!), but I can't find any factory ammunition :(

I now need a reasonably priced scope. I would welcome any recommendation / comments from my initial thoughts below or any alternative choices.

I have fitted Bushnell Elite scopes to customer rifles in the past and was quite impressed by the clarity of the optics however IOR and Vortex and both worth a closer look, as are Sightron. You are spoilt for choice so best thing so try and have a squint down as many of these as you can and see how you get on with the turrets and reticle and how much elevation you have and then consider the aesthetics if you are still undecided.

Do remember to budget for a reasonable set of rings.

Geek - go for the 8-32 Sightron with the LRMOA ret. but don't pay £928 for it!

See Foxy at Diggle or John Dean at Diggle - John is the UK Sightron importer.

I've just sold mine for £600 but there may be another on the club notice board.

I have a Sightron 8-32x56 with the new LRMOA-H reticle on my 6.5C Ruger, works very nicely indeed :)

I also have the 10-50x60 LRMOA on my 260 Rem T3, again a very nice scope :)

For rings, I'm using sets of UTG RG2W3226 Twist Locks (don't use the lever locks!), cheap as chips at £18 from J R Ramsbottom, not moved at all in over 9 months of lumping both rifles about :good:

eBay item number: 232038177658

They get very good reviews on the US gun sites.

Thanks,

I am leaning towards the Sightron 8-32x56 with the LRMOA, no rush yet - no bipod (waiting for a PHOENIX TACTICAL bipod (http://www.phoenixtactical.co.uk/cleaning-kits.html) and no factory ammunition; so waiting for reloading equipment to arrive.

You can use 22-250 cases, just run them through a 6.5C FLS die to open up the necks (lube inside and outside!), start with a first load about 1-2gr below min as they're a tapered case with less internal volume but they'll fire form perfectly 1st use. They'll be about .01"/.02" short of min Saami spec but work perfectly nicely :)

If you know anyone going to the US you can pick up Sightrons a good £250-£350 cheaper than here, even with import duty & Vat it works out a lot cheaper.

Fireforming 22-250 cases? - Not without reloading gear!

Yup - pick one up in the States for a few quid less - but then you can't hand it back to the UK importer if things go wrong............

Sightron warranty is worldwide, just send it back to the US :)

BTW the scope jacket they now include is awful, really thick and very, very tight, you almost need a can opener to get it off, and (good planning here) it doesn't fit with the lens shade fitted!, also no scope caps included, the relevant Butler Creek numbers are 16 and 51.

For a cover I'd 200% recommend Scopeshield, they will ship to the UK, https://scopeshieldcover.com/ just measure up and get a custom one made, I usually add an extra 1cm all round as I like mine a bit looser.

I was privileged to see what is believed to be the only box of 6.5 Creedmore ammo in the country, I would think that reloading will be the way to go on this.

Just start with 22-250 brass and neck it up, the price some dealers are charging for Hornady or Lapua cases is shocking, £129.50 for 100 Hornady!.
