Fascinating story...
You can see the Brit. Govt. s*** their public school pants at the thought of a 'Civilian Marksmanship Program'

Re: US CMP
The Director of Civilian Marksmanship and the successor Civilian Marksmanship Program have been putting firearms in the hands of he citizenry for decades.
I've picked up a fair number of M1 rifles, a 1903 Springfield, and an M1 carbine along with a goodly amount of .30 ball rounds.
Back in the 60s the DCM sold surplus 1911s as well. The CMP had 10,000 1911s transfered to them just before Obama left. We're waiting to see if Trump orders the secretary of the Army to release them for sale via the CMP.
Several years ago the CMP sold off a bunch of model 1917 rifles and Krag rifles turned in by veteran's groups that had exchanged them for M1s or closed completely. Some were in amazingly nice condition and some were chromed as parade rifles.
Until the recent announcement the word was that the CMP was about out of M1 rifles to sell. Hope the Philippine rifles make it here!
