12 Bore Sound Moderators

#1 Post by ovenpaa »

I had my hands on a Mossberg P/A .410 complete with sound moderator last night and was intrigued so I pulled it apart and was surprised at just how basic it was inside which set me thinking. I need to dispose of some tree rats outside a local manor house so noise is a bit of a consideration and I was going to use an Air rifle however the Viking has a single shot 12 Bore she never uses so it does make me wonder why I should not just build a sound moderator myself to suit the gun. The Mossberg mostly depends on a ported barrel with a threaded adapter at about the 18" mark and a bung on the end to centralise the external tube itself. Adding some baffles at the front of the barrel is no hardship however my question is just how effective are they on shotguns?

Anyone have any thoughts on such things and/or own a silenced 12 Bore?

I had a Browning B80 12g S/A.

While a cool concept with the ported barrel, baffles and rear expansion chamber it just was not very quiet, or reliable with subsonic cartridges.
Had a .410 moderated Bakial which was much much better.

No experience with a moderated single barrel 12g shotgun, though interested as I have a couple of Cooeys in the safe awaiting project ideas.

I am also looking for a moderator for my BR99. It's on my ticket already, and the Salvo12 probably would be a good fit but not at that price and its not available here.

Dave if you do make a moderator I suggest making it modular so that it can accept any thread adapter. Kind of like what Hausken do with their moderators. You can then sell a bunch of them...

Not entirely correct.
If for a section 1 shotgun on FAC, yes.
Sec 2 shotgun no.
