Scope help

#1 Post by Shabba998 »

Hi,

I have a cz452 .22lr which came with an old Tesco scope that is past its best. I'm looking to replace it with a decent scope but not got a lot to spend on it. What would people recommend. It will be used for target shooting upto 200mtrs, anything after that I would use hold over as the target would then be a sart, and pinpoint accuracy wouldn't be an issue. Something with decent mag to clearly see the strikes at 200yds.

Thanks in advance

That’s quite a list of requirements :)

Being able to see an individual .22 hole in paper at 200yds with a modestly priced rifle scope is nigh on impossible. If the light isn’t right and it’s in the Black I struggle to see a single hole at 100m...with a spotting scope.

What discipline are you shooting? Is it benchrest? Prone with sling? Off bags on a table? What’s the budget in real money? Higher magnification doesn’t always equal greater accuracy.

The standard forum budget scope advice is to look at Fox scopes - I’ve had a few and they’ve been cracking for the money. Phone them to see what they have and for latest prices.

Failing that if I was looking to put a £150 scope on (for example) I would consider a Hawke Vantage 6-24x50 or go secondhand.

Nikon has a line of good quality .22RF scopes. Check these out: https://www.nikonsportoptics.com/en/nik ... index.page I have three of their scopes, and have been pleased with the optical clarity for the price point. The ProStaff line are made in the Philippines, and it is said that the quality of the glass, while good, is not quite as good as the Monarch (made in Japan) line - I really cannot spot the difference. Several of them have the bullet-drop compensator reticle. I think there is probably one or more that might suit most of your criteria, although I agree with Kungfugerbil that seeing .22 holes at 200 metres may be an impossible ask.

Thanks for the replies, sorry BamBam predictive text took over lol

I know 200yds was a big ask, 100yds would be plenty. It would be for target shooting and then eventually farming when I find a permission. Never thought of trying nikon, will check them out.

I've looked through a fox firearms scope before and thought it looked Ok, but then read somewhere that they are similar to zos scopes and have had one of those on an air rifle when starting out doing FT. The Hawke I will look at to.

Thanks again guys

I have a Hawke on mine its fine.
I also have a fox firearms jobby they are good value for the money. As has all ready been said I think you will struggle at 200 yards to see a .22 on the target.

Thanks Alpha1, I'm looking at the nikon and vortex scopes, I've bought plenty of scopes over the years but always for air rifles. Shooting longer ranges now opens up different criteria. I've got a falcon m14 on my 223 and that is a good scope but not sure if it is wasted on a 22lr.

Vortex scopes are popular. I'm not really clued up on scopes having shot mainly military rifles over the years. It is only now that I have started acquiring modern rifles and scopes etc because I can not see to shoot anything accurately any more with iron sights and it gets boring and expensive when you shoot full bore ammo down range and have no idea were its going.

I agree with you there Alpha1 it's a waste of ammo if you have no idea where they are going. I think it's a learning curve when you get started so it's best to get advice from people who have been there and done that. It will save us some pain down the line:-)
