Travel Insurance for shooting

#1 Post by Daryll »

Hi Gents, looking for recomendations for Travel Insurance including shooting events...

I currently have a Santander policy (multi-trip, worldwide, for me and SWMBO), and while checking the policy document I noticed "pistol shooting" was in the hazardous activities package, which I don't have.

As we're going to the US for the World Shooting Chanpionships in Sept, I thought I ought to get that extra package. When I rang Santander and explained where I was going, they said they would not cover us at all for the trip, as it was for "competitive sports"...!! Even for the 10 days sightseeing after the event..!

It turns out the last 2 years I've been in blissful ignorance that I haven't been covered.

So, when people travel abroad for shooting events, who do you get your travel insurance from..?

TIA

Daryll.

Are you not a member of a shooting organisation that covers you for any shooting event?

BASC excludes North America. They also state ‘recreational use only’ but not sure if competition would fall foul of that. No idea about NRA or UKPSA though.

If your travel insurance has an exclusion for trips that include shooting (as a 'dangerous activity') then it is potentially worthless.

I recently used Integro Insurance via their Cardiff office for travel insurance to a match in Australia; they were recommended for a team that included full-bore rifle, smallbore rifle, clay and pistol shooters.

It looks like my best option is Dogtag

http://www.dogtag.co.uk

They specialise in extreme sports travel insurance, and Clay pigeon and Target Shooting are included in the basic package.
(You have to go up to the next package if you want to dive with sharks.!! wtf )

For 17 days cover, worldwide incl USA, its £52 to £76, depending on what level of cover you want.

The have no problem with competitive sports, as long as you're an amateur.

I have usually opted to get my travel insurance through Royal Mail when my work didn't cover it.

All shooting on 'proper' ranges were covered in the normal package, as was mincing round the Chernobyl exclusion zone when I went in 2007 and 2008.
