if i had a airrifle sub 12ft/lb and had a slot for fac air,
and wanted to tune it up and put it on my cert,
do i just inform them that this gun bsa ,22 cal serial number blah blah ,
but cant say whom i bought it off cos
it wasnt fac then,so no paper trail
can this be done via email or in writting

I would have thought it would be a simple matter of notifying your local firearm department of the serial number with a letter of explanation as to how it came to be, given you already have the slot.

You don't need a paper trail: this is exactly what happens when you put an antique / obsolete gun on ticket to shoot. It appears on the police saystem and then, if you decide to stop shooting it and take it off, it diaappears again.
