357 powder advice
Morning Peeps,
A while ago I purchased a Marlin 24" Cowboy special from Sim of this parish, and mighty pleased I am with it ! ( now wearing a Skinner sight :-)
When I had my previous Marlin ( 1894c 357) I ran the "standard" load ( well in our club) of 3.2g Bulllseye / 158 grain lead bullets. This was ok for County postal comps ( 20 mtrs ? )
I'd like to try and stretch it a bit ( when we can back to the ranges ?).
I'll be using 158g jacketed bullets, and I'd like to get out to at least 100.
Any ideas form a powder that is fairly readily available ( I seem to remember Sim saying that Vhit 110 might work)?
Obviously I'd go by manufactures data/chrono.
Thanks in advance

Re: 357 powder advice
Hodgdon H110, Winchester 296 or Vihtavuori N110 can be used to get proper magnum loads and net you top velocities in this cartridge. However, I don't believe that H110 is REACH compliant so you may struggle to source this powder in the near future so I'd stick with Viht N110. I've only used 125gr bullets with Vihtavuori N110 so I can't comment on personal experience with my Marlin on what results you should expect using this powder with 158gr bullets.
Alternative powders are Ramshot True Blue, Ramshot Enforcer and Reload Swiss RS30 of which you will find load data on their respective websites.
I've been meaning to make some 158gr loads with N110 and RS30 but haven't got around to doing it yet!

Vhit N110 definitely. 158 jacketed out of that 24” barrel, you’re going to be knocking on the door of 1900fps. That rifle will hold the black of a 300 McQueens nicely. Enjoy it!
In 1978 I was told by my grand dad that the secret to rifle accuracy is, a quality bullet, fired down a quality barrel..... How has that changed?

Re: 357 powder advice
You don't need anything like the factory load velocities for 100yds. For many years, my standard powder for 357 / 158grn was Unique. Five grains of Unique will certainly be good for 100yds and probably for 200.

Re: 357 powder advice
Save your self some cash by not using jacketed bullets for 100 yd shooting.
At my club we run comps out to 100yds any no one uses anything than their standard 1500/GR load.
Even these will do 200yds with correct elevation.
You can go to about 1500fps with a non gas checked lead bullet.

Re: 357 powder advice
In the pistol shooting days, I used 5 grn of Unique behing a 150grn RNL bullet for all the Police Pistol and 1500 competitions. After a 1500 match on our range (100yds) two of us were plinking off hand at bits of broken clay pidgeons in the sand bullet trap. I don't recall either of us missing any.

I used Lovex D037.1 with 158gr PPU FPJ bullets. 11grains gave me the best accuracy at 100yds. I tried D036 but it wasn’t consistent with 357 so use that for loading 38spl with hard lead semi wadcutters for 50m and it’s spot on.
