How do you scrap a rifle?

#1 Post by Quarters »

My club has an old rifle that will never be used again. There is no value in it.

I've never done this before. Can I hand it to an RFD who , for a fee, will dispose of if?

Can I hand it to the police? If so, after Covid, do I just walk into a police station will a rifle - I'm guessing not!

Thanks
I did a search on here but couldn't find anything.

From memory, the last time my club disposed of some old rifles, we stripped them of anything useful (sights, hand stops, in once case the stock), then took the actions and bolts to our regular RFD, who gave us a receipt for the police and destroyed them.

Then a variation to get them off the club ticket.

Is it not worth saving? There is some demand for Swing actions. Even putting it up at a low price / free for someone to re-barrel / re-stock.

On the occasions our club has disposed of broken or unwanted rifles we have taken off all the uncontrolled parts that we might be able to sell and handed the remains over the police for destruction.

If it's a Mk4 or later the bare action will be worth a bit and if it's complete it can be rebarreled and refurbished. Even the earlier marks may be worth something for the action, trigger & stock. And if it's a Mk1 it may be historically significant - what's the serial no?

I did this with an old shotgun, to start with I phoned the licencing department and asked them what to do.
They said go to your local police station and ask them to use a form specifically for doing this.
I am sorry I don’t remember the form number as it was years ago, your licencing department will advise

Don't hand it in to the police.

If it can't be sold and no one else in the club wants it as a donor or project give it to an RFD who may find a use for various parts, if only springs and pins. It will get it off the FAC and the club can get the variation.
Giving it to the police it will just get destroyed at best or at worst it could turn it in to a non-favourable statistic
Arming the Country, one gun at a time.

Good deals with Paul101, Charlotte the flyer, majordisorder, Charlie Muggins, among others. Thanks everybody.
