300 Whisper in Straight Pull?

#1 Post by phaedra1106 »

Saw a nice one at the range on Thursday night, seems a very nice calibre.

I know S&W do an AR15 based semi auto one (M&P15 - 300) which sells for around $870 and plan to have a look at one while we're over the pond later this month.

I've seen a couple of refs to Bradley Arms but there's nothing listed on their web site and no prices given for anything else (which usually means it'll be expensive!).

Anyone know of any knocking about in the UK?

Bradley Arms are the only ones I know of.

A review from a while ago http://www.gunmart.net/gun_review/300_whisper_ar15/

I know the one you saw - I was impressed with it too when he had it with him at an Edinburgh shoot

The 300 Whisper USED to be a proprietary cartridge - but it's now on the open market

All you'd need is to find a barrel blank of the correct pitch/groove type & a chamber reamer...and an AR smith to assemble it (OR just have a gunsmith thread the end to fit a std AR upper rec. )

Getting the bits together will be relatively easy. It's then just a case of some machining to get it to the profile/build type that you want - where the levers are, etc.

You DO know that the 300 Whisper is only warrantied with factory ammo - don't you?? tongueout

Only joking - though I did just read about one case where a shooter mixed up his 223 & 300 magazines. Seems that the gun was not happy but the bullet DID swage itself down to go through the barrel....

Jon, not use factory ammo? are you mad? troutslapping Who would do such a thing? wtfwtf

Actually the price shown on the Gun Mart review is about half of what I expected knowing how well the US$ translates to UK£ when it's anything to do with shooting gear!.

I need to email Griff tonight as I forgot to ask about club fees, we certainly don't want to be paying £16 visitors fees every week!, with having to buy 100rnds of 22lr for Jared to waste (I mean shoot) and a trip to the chip shop on the way back Thursday night cost me £34!!!.

I reckon 30 AAC Blackout is just as good. I'm looking for somebody with the chamber reamer and headspace gauges to machine a Douglas barrel blank I have spare.

Jeff, I'm sure Low Mill and NWCP have .300 in their inventory. Whisper or Blackout, they are ostensibly the same with Whisper still being the "Wildcat". Remington make factory Blackout ammo......!!
In 1978 I was told by my grand dad that the secret to rifle accuracy is, a quality bullet, fired down a quality barrel..... How has that changed?

As I understand it you can shoot either Whisper or Blackout in the same rifle, I would certainly not be loading my own ammo :squirrel: (but if I was it would be 4.5gr of TrailBoss with a 110/115gr bullet).

Dave Wylde also lists AR15s in the calibres discussed, along with a few others.

I've just picked up an AR15 in .223 that he built and I'm delighted with it.

A mate of mine has a Bradley Arms 300 whisper and it's great fun.

Thanks for all the input :good:

I'll start looking round tomorrow and see what's available, we're off across the pond shortly so will put my FAC in for variation while we're away.
