I too thought you may have confused the .338 Federal with the Lapua round as neither of the cartridges mentioned would normally be described as long range cartridges. Both good solid cartridges for short range though. With the right bullet such as a Woodleigh the 9.3mm (.366") is considered suitable for game up to buffalo. I've never had any experience of the .338 Federal but a friend is currently rebarreling a rifle in .338Winchester and that is considered a good cartridge for elk/moose (he's from Scandinavia).[/quote]

-Chapuis, The 'safari' conditions i knew many years ago now were shooting at short distance (dp not remember shooting a buffle longer than 70-80 metres and the 5 tonners much closer) nd it was necessary to have the animal absorb the maximum energy,and flat trajectories and longer range remaining energy were not the requirement when it was to stpp a charge starting at clpse distance...and ending close to to your feet.

BTW; the Chapuis you mention is a wonderful Express; and the 9,3x74 a calibre I would have used with no reservations for taking a buffalo, and why not an elephant occasionally.....

I've never had any desire to shoot an elephant R.G.C. but I suppose the 9.3 would be up to it with the right type of bullet but there are far more capable rounds for the big dangerous stuff. I would however like to have a go at a buffalo but my desire would be to do this in northern Australia, I suppose I had better buy a lottery ticket. I don't think there is any shortage of buffs in Oz.
