Actually it's two.
One was an off duty police officer using a privately owned full auto M11 to murder a drug dealer.
The other was also a MAC type SMG possibly used by a doctor to murder some sort of love rival.
If I remember right, both happened in Ohio.

Its nothing to do with crime, the police and government would prefer it if no civilians had firearms they are just chipping away at it.

Exactly!

The last thing a repressive Govt. wants is any portion of the population armed.

True but they like to keep quiet about that.
More than 300 rifles, pistols and machine guns have been stolen or lost at British Army bases since 2006, it was claimed today.

Soldiers either lost the firearms or sold them on the black market illegally, sometimes to criminals.

A total of 58 pistols, 52 rifles and four machine guns were stolen, according to a Freedom of Information request.

Oh well, not a perfect record anymore. In any event, still not a bad record: 2 in 82 years. However the gun control types will still claim there is a problem.

Ignoring the accuracy or otherwise of the 800 figure, that seems to be a reasonable statement.

That sort of depends on how many, went missing because of poor security.
